BODE-MUSEUM GUIDED TOUR
Bode-Museum: European Art History at the Tip of the Island
As the Bode-Museum rises majestically above the water, it immediately strikes the visitor with its imposing dome. With its position on the northern tip of the Spree Island, it is considered the gateway to the art treasures of the Museumsinsel. The Bode-Museum combines several collections: the Skulpturensammlung (the Sculpture Collection) and the Museum für Byzantinische Kunst (the Museum of Byzantine Art) as well as the Münzkabinett (the Coin Cabinet). During the tour, you will see the works by some of the most important sculptors in Europe, such as Tilmann Riemenschneider, Niclas Gerhaert van Leyden, Donatello, Antonio Canova and Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. Together with the sculptures, works of art from the Gemäldegalerie (the Picture Gallery) are presented as well. Explore the development of European art history with ARIADNE – from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and Baroque to Classicism. Immerse yourself in the world of ancient mythologies and biblical stories.
Bode-Museum – In Majestic Rooms through the Centuries
Opened in 1904 as the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, today's Bode-Museum began its triumph with a groundbreaking exhibition concept. Displayed next to one another, the paintings and sculptures are coequally presented – a hitherto unprecedented way of staging. With his room design, court architect Ernst von Ihne knew how to give visitors an understanding of the moods of past periods of art. In doing so, architectural details such as marble flooring, coffered ceilings, fireplaces and altars set subtle accents. In the so-called basilica, which resembles an Italian Renaissance church, religious sculptures are presented in an authentic way.
